MissionClose

Close windows straight from Mission Control.

MissionClose adds the buttons Mission Control is missing. Swipe up, hover a window, click ✕. No more opening a window just to close it.

Free and open source · macOS 13 or later · Apple Silicon and Intel
Hover a window, click ✕. Real recording, nothing sped up.

Try it: hover a window and use its buttons.

Everything you'd expect. Right where you look.

Mission Control shows every window but won't let you touch them. MissionClose fixes that, and stays out of the way the rest of the time.

Real traffic lights

Close, minimize or go full screen from the thumbnail, in Mission Control and App Exposé alike. The buttons behave exactly like the ones on the window.

Keyboard, too

Hover a window and press ⌘W to close it, ⌘Q to quit its app, ⌘M to minimize, or ⌘⌥W to close the app's other windows.

Quit, on purpose

Hold ⌥ and ✕ becomes ⏻ to quit the whole app. Turn on confirmation and it takes a second click.

Never mid-swipe

Buttons appear only once Mission Control has settled and your fingers are off the trackpad. No flicker, no stray clicks.

Allow Accessibility

macOS asks once. MissionClose needs it to see Mission Control's thumbnails and press a window's buttons.

Swipe up

Open Mission Control your usual way: a three-finger swipe, F3, ⌃↑ or a hot corner. Hover a window. App Exposé (⌃↓) works too.

Questions

Why does it need Accessibility access?

macOS has no public API for Mission Control. MissionClose reads the thumbnails' positions through the accessibility interface, catches clicks on its buttons before Mission Control does, and presses the real window's close, minimize or full-screen button. It doesn't read window contents, log keystrokes, or connect to the internet.

macOS says it can't verify the developer.

Open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway. You only need to do this once.

Which versions of macOS are supported?

macOS 13 Ventura and later, on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

What's the difference between ✕ and ⏻?

✕ closes that one window, like its red button. Hold ⌥ and it turns into ⏻, which quits the whole app, including its other windows. Apps with unsaved changes still ask before quitting.

Is it really free?

Yes. It's open source under the MIT license. The code is on GitHub, and issues and pull requests are welcome.

Stop opening windows just to close them.
